We've all done it at one time or another. Stressing over exams, waiting for that important interview outcome and suddenly before we know it we're chewing on our fingers. For some, its an occasional pass time...for others, that habit just gets worse!
Nail biting (also known as onychophagia) is an oral compulsive habit. It's very common, especially amongst children with up to 30% of kids biting their nails.
For those who suffer with this compulsion, it can lead to infections of the nail plate, cuticles and surrounding skin and these wounds become an entry point for bacteria, viruses and in more serious cases, fingernails may become deformed due to destruction of the nail bed.
Common treatments include a bitter-tasting nail polish (I remember my Nan slathering this onto my nails when I was about 8 years old...I couldn't tell you if it worked or not), it tasted awful but I still sucked on my fingers! Another treatment for severe nail biters is a dental deterrent device that prevents the front teeth from damaging the nail plate and surrounding skin and after a couple of months it can stop the nail biting urge.
I'd like to try another way...

Nail biting is a treatable condition called Onychophagia and is considered an oral impulse control disorder. Many nail biters adopt the habit during childhood and about half of all adolescents bite their nails. Most become so familiar with the constant chewing that they don’t even realise they’re doing it until it's too late and damage to the nail and surrounding skin occur.
Nail biting can range in severity. From the occasional nervous nibble, to biting and picking the skin around the nail until it bleeds and in extreme cases, removing the entire nail and damaging further nail growth! It’s not surprising that this can have a negative impact on self-esteem and confidence.
Nail biters tend to pinpoint times when they ‘bite’ more than others, particularly at times of stress, tension and anxiety. The current pandemic could be be a factor for many and the biting can then turn into a vicious cycle that's hard to crack.
It’s not just nail biting that's a problem, it also has consequences for your health. Every time you bite, you’re transferring bacteria between your fingers and your mouth which can either be ingested, or enter any wounds on the fingers.
Nail biting leading to broken skin on the cuticles, leaves the fingers open to microbial and viral infections such as paronychia. Saliva may then redden and infect the skin and biting hangnails can cause infections under the nail bed. Even worse, it can permanently damage nails, gums and teeth such as gingival injury and misalignment of the anterior teeth.
Many nail biters reach a point in their lives where they are so sick of the embarrassment and pain of nail biting, they are able to stop biting by sheer will power.
Ultimately, it’s your own determination that allows you to finally stop biting your nails. Looking at it in this way, nail biting is simply a bad habit. As with most bad habits, it’s easier to break if you replace the habit with something positive and that’s why nourishing manicures and looking after you nails and hands is so effective!
The aim of my 8 week Nail Biting Recovery Programme is to support and re-educate you, so that once you have achieved your goal, you can continue to have beautiful, strong, healthy nails going forward. People who have bitten their nails are often embarrassed of their hands and do not see them as something to be proud of. By showing you how elegant your nails can look, it should result in a great feeling of pride and decreases the desire to bite them once the programme has finished.
You will have four weekly appointments, followed by two fortnightly appointments. This will require full commitment from you to attend your appointments and follow all the advice provided.

The programme includes a variety of treatments depending on individual circumstances, but usually consists of highly effective luxury manicures using the infamous Dadi Scrub, Dadi' Oil and Dadi Lotion, which includes nail and cuticle exfoliation and nourishment, IBX Strengthening Treatment to strengthen the nail plate on the inside and Builder in a Bottle overlays to provide a protective layer to your nails to help prevent peeling, splitting and nail breakages.
SUPPORT:
As a professional nail technician, I regularly see people who have bitten their nails so badly the nails even look painful. Clients feel embarrassed and sometimes hopeless, believing that they will never have nice nails. Sadly, because nail biting is so common, it is easy to dismiss it as just a nasty habit instead of the disorder that it is and by masking the habit with extensions, it doesn't rectify the root cause of the problem.
An understanding of the condition is extremely important, as suitable care needs to be taken. Like a lot of people, I find that achieving goals are so much easier when done with others so seek the support from friends and family to help keep your motivation high. The simple fact of having another person with whom to share goals and achievements with allows you to succeed in your efforts to quit biting.
My commitment to you is to be there with you all the way. I'll be there to talk through any worries or concerns that you have in between our appointments and to give you lots of encouragement and support. After all, a problem shared is a problem halved!
